إعجامIʿjāmthe dots that tell letters apart
Across West Africa, centuries of history, medicine and trade were written in Ajami: languages like Hausa and Fulfulde, written in Arabic letters. Many of those manuscripts are now fading. In these scripts a single dot changes the letter, and computer models trained on ordinary Arabic tend to wipe those dots away.
So I built an improved OCR system that reads handwritten Hausa Ajami, Fulfulde Ajami and Arabic manuscripts. Instead of trusting one model, several different models read each line, and a meta-learner lines their readings up letter by letter and votes. Iʿjām is the app that puts it in people’s hands.
